Summary of position responsibilities - The Administrative Manager for the Philosophy Department, Ethics and Public Life Program, and Philosophical Review journal manages the business and administrative operations of an academic department, a program, and a top-rated academic journal. Responsible for the personnel, curriculum and enrollment operations, financial, and space management; as well as for interpreting and implementing human resource, financial, and other administrative policies. Understand and manage the interrelationships across these areas and the cross-functional impact of program and resource decisions. Institute sound administrative procedures to ensure consistency, fairness and compliance in operations. Supervise three staff positions, oversee, and coordinate administrative support for teaching programs, the undergraduate major, two undergraduate minors, the graduate field, commencement and other department functions. Monitor, oversee and forecast balances for appropriated, gift, and endowment accounts. Review and adjust, in consultation with department chair, the annual budget for the department and submit it to the college. Manage or support long range planning projects for chair and the faculty with respect to resources, operations and policy development. Help ensure that University policy is followed in all departmental actions. Generate financial reports as requested for department chair, faculty, college or AA&D. Coordinate and manage all department event needs, from individual guest speakers to conference planning; arrange lodging, event space, possible travel arrangements, and process travel reimbursements, honoraria payments, and paying for services as needed. Update department website as needed with events, staffing, and other changes as needed.
After a period of training, the possibility of working remotely one day/week may be considered.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum education and experience equivalency - Bachelor’s degree plus 5-7 years managerial, supervisory, and financial experience or equivalent combination. Several years of managerial experience in an academic department preferred. As a generalist, this position requires competencies across the functional areas. Requires strong supervisory, managerial, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills and experience as well as a good background in financial and technology (e.g., database, CU administrative & financial systems) matters. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with diplomacy. An in-depth understanding and appreciation of academic department business activities is important. A proven ability to simultaneously manage multiple areas, events and deadlines, evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain a collaborative and effective work environment are a must.
